For all Berliners and those who will hit our lovely town this weekend or in the following weeks - there will be an interesting exhibition at the Galerie für moderne Fotografie you should make sure not to miss.
Curated by our fashion-editor Ann-Kathrin Obermeyer and our beloved photographer Adrian Crispin, whose works are also exhibited, „This Land Was Made for You and Me“ takes stock of contemporary photography in the USA on the intersection of commercial, editorial and fashion photography and individual artistic positions.

American singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie (1912-1967) who wrote the song “This Land is Your Land“ in the 1940s – a hymn that soon became one of the best-known and most covered of American folksongs – as a critical retort to Irvin Berlin’s “God Bless America”, which Guthrie held for an unrealistic and complacent portrayal of the United States.
In „This Land is Your Land“, Guthrie doesn’t only sing about the country’s beautiful landscape but also of its people and social realities, basing his lyrics on his own westward journey, having left his native Oklahoma, which was devastated by the severe dust storms of the Dirty Thirties.

The photographs in the exhibition „This Land Was Made for You and Me“ show snapshots of predominantly young Americans from the perspectives of such photographers as
Aaron McElroy, Anna Moller, Coley Brown, Colin Dodgson, David Schulze, Grant Willing, Kathy Lo, Logan White, Nicky Lesser, RJ Shaughnessy, Sarah Palmer and Skye Parrott.

Enlcosed a little chat we had yesterday in our office.
ILY: How did you choose the photographers?
Adrian Crispin: The first criteria was that we responded to the most important questions. "Do we like the picture?" Then we choose pictures that we both liked, often for different reasons.
ILY: Did you know the photographers before, are they your friends ?
Adrian Crispin: We don't know any of them.
Ann-Kathrin Obermayer: It was very important for us to select artists who are not famous yet. Photographers who are not very well-known but doing good work. They are all very talented. Im tired of seeing the same photogaphers over and over again.
Adrian Crispin: Yes. For example, we didn't want to ask Ryan McGinley because we thought that this is no news?
Ann-Kathrin Obermeyer: I don't know maybe it is different in Berlin. Maybe they would love to see a Ryan McGinley show and of course he is a great artist but we wanted to bring in new photographers like the Californian guy RJ Shaughnessy - He is just nineteen, a skater-boy and every picture he takes is just WOW.
ILY: And how did you find him?
Ann-Kathrin Obermeyer: Coincidence. I found a picture of him in a magazine and then googled his name and so on. All in all, the whole preparation took us one year.
ILY: So how did the idea for the exhibition come up?
Ann-Kathrin Obermeyer: It was Kirsten Hermann’s idea. She liked our work very much and then she asked us to do an exhibition about young, American photographers - a group show. This was one year ago. And to be here at the gallery weekend in Berlin is a great time and opportunity to finally realize it.

( EASTER SUNDAY THAT YEAR FELL ON 1 APRIL.) THIS WORK 96" X 74" WAS PAINTED WITH OIL PAINT AND NEWSPRINT (ADDED TO SLOW THE DRYING TIME) WHICH WAS MOUNTED ON CANVAS. USING HUGE BRUSHES, DE KOONING WORKED VERY FAST OVER LONG PERIODS OF TIME IN THE EFFORT TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING THAT WASN'T OF A PRECONCEIVED NATURE. AT THE END OF THESE SESSIONS, HE MORE OFTEN THAN NOT FOUND HIMSELF COMPLETELY EXAUSTED.
AS HE DID NOT ALWAYS WORK ON THE SAME PAINTING EACH DAY, THIS PROCESS COULD GO ON FOR MONTHS. THE NEXT INTEGRAL PART OF THE ARTIST'S CREATIVE PROCESS WOULD BEGIN UPON ARRIVAL AT THE STUDIO, AT WHICH TIME DE KOONING HAD A "FRESH" LOOK AT THE PAINTING IN QUESTION. IN THE EARLY MORNING CALM, THIS OPENING VIEW PROVIDED HIM A CONTEMPLATIVE MOMENT TO SEE IF HIS ENERGETIC EFFORTS MIGHT BECOME A PAINTING IN THE PUREST FORM. HE WOULD STUDY THE IMAGE OF A "NOTHING OR A SOMETHING" AT LENGTH, IN THE HOPES OF DISCERNING THE SIMPLE GEOMETRIC POSSIBILITIES. WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE HE COULD THEN ADD, WHERE NECESSARY, SECONDARY EXTENSIONS TO STABILIZE AND STRENGTHEN THE EXISTING GEOMETRIC FORMS, BUT, WITHOUT HAVING THEM DOMINATE THE OVERALL STRUCTURE. THE PRE-EXISTING GEOMETRY WOULD THUS REMAIN A SILENT PARTNER INVISIBLY HELPING TO CONVEY THE ARTIST'S VISION. IN THIS WAY THE SURFACE WAS KEPT FRESH AND EXCITING, ALLOWING THE WORK'S FRONTAL ELEMENT TO BE THE COLORS AND SHAPES MOVING FORWARD AND BACK, CARESSING THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER.

When I use to look in the mirror I would see this woman who did not love herself and wanted to be the perfect everything to everyone. She would often act as a superhero saving all those who screamed for a prayer or advice while she enabled them to solely depend on her. She was ignorant to the fact she was trying to be someones savior and her own god but had the inability to save herself. She believed if she pretended to act inhuman she would be invincible to the pangs of heartache so she took on a robotic exterior . Dominating her way to the top only to find herself alone and wondering why every guy wanted to hit but not commit and lead her astray just to say they were not interested in what she had to offer. She was puzzled not having a clue why this pattern followed her like a shadow. This woman had no idea that she was "the perfect imperfection" waiting to be accepted for the authentic her. She modified herself for her friends approval, for a man's approval and for the world's acceptance. It was not meant for her to conform but it was meant for her to break the mold and defy the odds by being true to herself. In essence this woman is me and I never was happy until I started to live life on my own terms by being who I was "the imperfect" me. I begin to work on the authentic me. The biggest injustice I did to myself was allowing others to tell me what I should be and giving them control to control me. I would often let my friends tell me what was best for me when they had no clue what was really best for me. I was passive letting people boss me around without speaking up for myself. However, in 2011 a revolution began when I got out of my last relationship and realized how I changed myself for a man who never really wanted me. It hurt me to know my pattern with men had not changed. I needed a wake up call and so in April 2011 I began to go on a soul searching journey. In my year of soul searching I realized the issues I had and the baggage that I was carrying needed to be handled. The one thing I realized is I was acting perfect for people who never really cared about me. I came to understand the perfect person I was trying to be was nonexistent. I had myself on a high pedestal thinking I had to do everything perfect so I would not fail. When friendships failed, relationships failed and everything else failed I would blame myself harshly. But now I realize I am perfect, I am the perfect imperfection. My flaws is what make me human, beautiful and realistic. I can be myself without restraints and if people judge me it doesn't matter because opinions are not perfect but someones shallow idea of what they believe is the truth about me. I am no longer suffering for the acceptance of others. I have allowed myself to make room for failure. If things fail in my life I understand I have another chance to get it right. I do not have to live up to others expectations of me because I am going to be the woman God created me to be. I do not have to hide who I am just to be accepted. I am learning to understand rejection is not a bad thing it is actually a character building tool to help you understand that person or thing was not meant to be there...their season ended. I am learning to be happy with the perfect imperfect me. Whoever cannot accept me for who I am then I realized it is not up to me to convince them. I am okay with who "Stylicia" is in this point in my life...."The Perfect Imperfection".
So I encourage you to be true to yourself, find out who your are and never lie to yourself that is the worst thing you can do!

All my good intentions about staying up super late Saturday or getting up extra early on Sunday to finish my homework were ill-conceived in the first place, and therefore went unexecuted. So I awoke with the desire to spend more family time, slighly dampered by the nagging requirement to do homework. All of which became OBE when JR said he thought Phoebe might need stitches, so I played with Christopher while JR & Phoebe went to urgent care. After more than a two hour wait, however, the urgent care place sent them to the ER in case she needed stitches, because apparently they are unable to stitch faces.
So he brought her home for a quick bite to eat, and I took her to the ER, where she was seen after an incredulous five minute wait (we had been quoted 1½hrs), and her chin was butterfly-stitched (which could have been done at the urgent care place, probably much cheaper).
So we got a late start to NB's, enjoyed a "cooked in the yard" dinner, then enjoyed some family Jenga! AJ lasted but one round, then needed to be put to bed due to unsportsman-like conduct. Grandma & Grandpa & Uncle Dre & Phoebe enjoyed several more fun-filled rounds before NB sent us home so I could finish my homework.
I was completely unsatisfied with my paper, but I submitted it at midnight when it was due.
Note to self: do not schedule anything during the last week of school.

Grandma & Grandpa arrived Friday, so we met after work at NB's for a spaghetti dinner and a brief chit-chat/catch-up, then disbursed so our out-of-state travelers could rest. Phoebe & Christopher both fell asleep in the car (standard), and both managed to stay mostly asleep through the transition from car to bed (a first!).
By early Saturday Phoebe was ready to head STRAIGHT to Grandma & Grandpa's hotel for some pool time! I let her pack her swim stuff, but insisted we go to NB's so the plan of the day could come together with the inputs of all involved. :) AJ had a rough day and wasn't up to pool play, so we chatted the day away, enjoyed a Pizza Hut dinner, and then snuck off to the pool without AJ. When I asked Christopher if he wanted to swim he said no, so I stayed dressed, but took him and his swim trunks with us to the pool to watch Phoebe & Grandma play. I think I heard Phoebe say "Grandma, watch me!" about a million times. :) Then Christopher got interested, so I got him changed and deposited him into the water with Grandma. I'm glad I didn't get in too, because Christopher clung to his Grandma with hugs and smiles and play like never before. They both seemed to really enjoy it.
Then as the pool closed and I attempted to wrangle up the wet munchkins, Phoebe banged her chin on the edge of the pool. :( It didn't bleed much, and she didn't cry at all, but I know chin injuries hurt. Grandpa put a band-aid on it and we headed home. Christopher again stayed asleep through the transition, but Phoebe got her chin re-bandaged by Daddy and stayed up to watch the Kid's Choice Awards (KCAs). She has already suggested that we might have to move to California when the time comes so she can attend "Hollywood Arts" (the high school where fictitious Victoria Justice and her friends to go school).

Because of Love is a major new performance piece by Franko B, aiming to bring his practices to new audiences - not only within the context of visual art, but also dance and theatre.
Collaborating with some fantastic artists from different fields to realize the piece, concerned with childhood, humanity, inhumanity, love and grief.
Because of Love is loosely autobiographical, drawing upon personal and cultural memories from different times in Franko B's life.
Central to the work is the idea of the sentimentality of memory, the emotional charge and romanticism often applied to the experience of remembering.
Ambitious in its scale and complexity, bringing together elements of human presence, projected video, live music and lighting to weave a loose, non-linear narrative. The performance will involve a duet betwixt Franko B and a life-sized, mechanical polar bear: not so much as a tightly controlled piece of choreography, but more as an instinctive response to the dynamic mis-en-scene and contexts in which the work is shown in.
The first two public presentations of BECAUSE OF LOVE will take place in May 2012 at LICA (Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts) and Colchester Arts Centre - more details to follow shortly.
